EV vs gas: running costs in Canada

Over 20,000 km, an EV can save you more than $2,500 a year in energy. Here’s what else belongs in the sum.

Checked 24 Oct 2026

Energy for 20,000 km

Gas car (8 L/100 km): about $2,949 (StatCan). EV at 18 kWh/100 km = 3,600 kWh: about $254 at Hydro-Québec’s first-block rate (Hydro-Québec), or $427 at BC Hydro step 1 (BC Hydro). These are energy charges only.

Other costs

  • Maintenance: no oil changes, and brakes wear less. Winter tires are needed either way.
  • Insurance: get quotes, as it varies by model and province.
  • Rebates can cut the purchase price: rebates guide.

About sales tax

Canadian prices on this page are shown as published. Pump prices include fuel taxes and GST/HST; electricity rates are usually quoted before GST, HST or PST, which vary by province (5% GST up to 15% HST), so we don't split them out. Check your bill or the charger app for the tax that applies to you.
