Installing a Level 2 home charger

A Level 2 charger makes home charging fast and easy. What you pay depends mostly on your electrical panel and how far the charger is from it.

What affects the job

  • Panel capacity: a load calculation shows whether you need a panel or service upgrade. Load-management chargers can avoid one.
  • Distance and route from panel to parking spot.
  • Circuit size: a 40 A circuit for a 32 A (7.7 kW) charger is common, and smaller circuits work if you drive less.

Permits

An electrical permit is generally required for a new 240 V circuit. Use a licensed electrician; in Québec, a Corporation des maîtres électriciens member.

Cost and rebates

No official source publishes a national typical installation price, and quotes vary a lot, so we don’t quote one. Get two or three itemized quotes. Some utilities and provinces have offered charger rebates. Check with your utility before buying.
