Installing a Level 2 home charger
A Level 2 charger makes home charging fast and easy. What you pay depends mostly on your electrical panel and how far the charger is from it.

What affects the job
- Panel capacity: a load calculation shows whether you need a panel or service upgrade. Load-management chargers can avoid one.
- Distance and route from panel to parking spot.
- Circuit size: a 40 A circuit for a 32 A (7.7 kW) charger is common, and smaller circuits work if you drive less.
Permits
Most areas need an electrical permit for a new 240 V circuit. Use a licensed electrician.
Cost and rebates
No official source publishes a national typical installation price, and quotes vary a lot, so we don’t quote one. Get two or three itemized quotes. The federal 30C credit ended for equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026 (IRS). Check state and utility charger rebates via AFDC.
