Home batteries and EVs: does it pay?
A home battery can pay off, but only with the right rates. For most EV owners, simply charging overnight does the job.

When it can pay
- A big gap between your utility’s off-peak and peak prices.
- Solar panels with low export credits.
- Frequent outages, where backup power is the main value.
When it rarely pays
If your rate is flat, a battery just stores power you could have bought at the same price. Charge the car directly on your cheapest hours instead.
Prices
Installed prices vary widely by installer, size and electrical work, and no official U.S. source publishes a typical figure. We won’t guess. Get several written quotes, and check your utility and the official incentives list for any rebates.
