UK EV charging cost index
November 2026 edition. Published . Updated monthly.
Charging on a public rapid charger costs about 8 times as much as charging at home on a smart EV tariff. 100 miles costs about £2.79 at home overnight, £8.36 at home at the price cap, and £22.86 on rapid chargers. A 45 mpg petrol car costs about £17.59, so the average rapid charger costs more per mile than petrol. Tesla owners pay about £13.43 at peak on Superchargers.
| Where you charge | Price per kWh | Cost per 100 miles |
|---|---|---|
| Home, at the price cap | 26.32p | £8.36 |
| Home, smart EV tariff (overnight) | 8.8p | £2.79 |
| Public slow/fast (AC, up to 22 kW) | 49.67p | £14.19 |
| Public rapid/ultra-rapid (DC) | 80p | £22.86 |
| Tesla Supercharger, Tesla owner (peak) | 47p | £13.43 |
| Tesla Supercharger, non-Tesla without membership (peak) | 65p | £18.57 |
| Petrol car (unleaded, 45 mpg) | 174.07p/litre | £17.59 |
Cost per 100 miles assumes a car doing 3.5 miles per kWh. Home figures add 10% for charging losses. Petrol assumes 45 mpg. Try your own car in the EV cost calculator.

The index starts with October 2026. Tesla and petrol rows start in November 2026. A new row is added each month. Correction, 1 November 2026: the October rapid basket listed IONITY at 79p (its in-app price) and Tesla at a 70p midpoint. It uses IONITY Direct 83p and Tesla's non-member peak price of 65p. The 80p average is unchanged.

- Home, at the price cap: Ofgem price cap unit rate, GB average, direct debit, 1 Oct–31 Dec 2026. VAT on domestic electricity is 0% from 1 Oct 2026 to 31 Mar 2027.
- Home, smart EV tariff (overnight): Median of six GB off-peak EV rates: Intelligent Octopus Go 6.5p, EDF GoElectric 6.66p, E.ON Next Drive Smart 8.095p, British Gas EV Power 9.5p, E.ON Next Drive 9.524p, OVO Charge Anytime 13.33p.
- Public slow/fast (AC, up to 22 kW): Simple average of standard pay-as-you-go daytime AC prices on the networks' own price pages: Be.EV 25p, char.gy 59p (weekday day), bp pulse 65p (7 kW). Not usage-weighted.
- Public rapid/ultra-rapid (DC): Simple average of pay-as-you-go rapid prices on the networks' own price pages: IONITY Direct (contactless/QR, no registration) 83p, InstaVolt 92p, Osprey 82p, bp pulse 89p, Be.EV 69p (59p–79p midpoint), Tesla Supercharger non-member peak 65p (lowest peak price in our 6-site sample). Not usage-weighted. This is the site's UK public default.
- Tesla Supercharger, Tesla owner (peak): Peak price for Tesla owners: the lowest peak price in a sample of 6 UK Superchargers (range 47p–48p). Off-peak from 21p, evening shoulder from 26p. Prices vary by site and time.
- Tesla Supercharger, non-Tesla without membership (peak): Peak price for non-Tesla cars without Supercharging Membership: the lowest peak price in a sample of 6 UK Superchargers (range 65p–74p). Off-peak from 32p (range 32p–41p). Membership gives owner prices.
- Petrol car (unleaded, 45 mpg): DESNZ weekly UK average pump price for ULSP (unleaded petrol), week of 26 Oct 2026: 174.07p per litre. Cost per 100 miles at 45 mpg (UK gallons), the same assumption as our calculator: 100 ÷ 45 × 4.546 = 10.10 litres.
Method
- Home at the cap: Ofgem's GB average unit rate for the quarter. Regional rates differ.
- Home on a smart EV tariff: the median off-peak rate of six widely available GB EV tariffs. Day rates and standing charges are not included.
- Tesla Supercharger: the lowest peak price in a sample of six UK sites, for Tesla owners and for other cars without membership. Off-peak prices are lower.
- Petrol: the DESNZ weekly UK average unleaded price, at 45 mpg (UK gallons): 100 ÷ 45 × 4.546 = 10.1 litres per 100 miles.
- Public AC and rapid: a simple average of pay-as-you-go list prices on each network's own price page, without membership. It is not weighted by how much each network is used.
- VAT: shown with and without. Home electricity has 0% VAT from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Public charging has 20% VAT.
- Cost per 100 miles: 100 ÷ 3.5 = 28.6 kWh. For home charging we divide by 0.9 for losses (31.7 kWh). We add nothing for public charging, which bills the energy delivered.
- We check prices by hand on official pages and publish a new edition each month. Read more on our press and data page.
