EV tax credits and incentives in the U.S. (2026)
The federal EV tax credits are gone, but there can still be money on the table from your state, city or utility.
Checked Oct 24, 2026
Federal credits: ended
- New clean vehicle credit (30D), used clean vehicle credit (25E) and commercial credit (45W): not available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025 (IRS).
- Home charger credit (30C): ended for property placed in service after June 30, 2026 (IRS).
Be wary of anyone offering a "federal EV rebate" on a car bought today.
State, local and utility incentives
Some states still have rebates, registration-fee or HOV-lane rules, and many utilities offer charger rebates or EV rates. They change often, and some have funding caps. Search the official U.S. Department of Energy database by state: AFDC: federal and state laws and incentives. Then confirm on the state agency’s own page before you buy.
Fees EVs pay
Many states charge EVs an extra annual registration fee in place of gas tax. The AFDC search above lists these as "laws and regulations". Include them when you compare running costs.

Compare public charger prices: Prices change, check before you charge. The price shown in the operator’s app or on the charger is the one you pay.
