Road trip charging

Plan the stops, not the panic. A long drive on rapids is a coffee break — if you treat it that way.

Most EV range anxiety is a planning problem, not a battery problem. On a road trip you are not trying to copy a petrol fill. You are inserting 20–30 minute stops that already match how people travel: toilet, coffee, stretch, back on the motorway.

1. Charge at the destination first

2. Plan the route — then add a spare

In-car nav (especially Tesla) and apps such as ABRP or Zap-Map are good enough if you give them honest inputs: motorway speeds, passengers, weather, and a reserve. Then add one extra site you can skip.

Never plan to arrive at a charger on fumes. A 15–20% buffer absorbs a closed stall, a queue, or a colder-than-forecast morning without turning the day into a recovery mission.

3. Stop at 10–80%, not empty-to-full

DC charging is fastest in the middle of the battery. The last 20% is slow, expensive in time, and rarely worth it unless the next gap is genuinely long or you are stopping for the night.

4. Advertised kW is a ceiling, not a promise

A 350 kW post does not mean your car takes 350 kW. Charge speed is the lowest of: the post, the car’s peak, the state of charge, battery temperature, and how many neighbours are sharing the same cabinet.

For most family EVs, a 20–30 minute 10–80% stop is the realistic rhythm. If a site is sharing power and you are crawling at 40 kW, leave for the backup hub rather than waiting it out.

5. Pay before you need to

UK and European networks still split across apps, RFID cards, and contactless. Install the two or three you will actually hit (plus a roaming option if you cross borders) the night before. Do not discover a “members only” stall at 8% with a queue behind you.

6. Why a Tesla makes this easier

The physics do not change — you still stop, you still charge 10–80%, and a 350 kW post is still a ceiling. Tesla’s advantage is that the car, the map, the charger, and the bill are one system. Most of the jobs in this guide shrink to “drive, plug in, walk away.”

Other brands are catching up — better in-car planners, plug-and-charge on some networks, and Superchargers that now take non-Tesla cars in the UK and Europe. Those drivers still usually pay in an app and do not get Tesla’s automatic preconditioning or in-car stall data. The gap is narrower than it was. It is still a gap.

A Tesla does not make weekday public charging cheap. It makes the occasional long day feel like a petrol trip: one map, one plug, one bill. Keep that separate from the running-cost case below.

7. Road-trip cost is not your running cost

Rapids can approach or beat petrol per mile. That is fine for a holiday. It is a different spreadsheet from weekday charging at home. Keep the two stories separate — see public charging reality check.

In the EV Cost Comparison, model your normal year with a low public %. Then, if you like, add one long trip as a lump of extra public kWh. A week on the motorway should not decide whether the car is cheaper than petrol for the other fifty-one.

If home charging covers the commute and school run, road-trip rapids are a convenience cost — like a motorway meal. Budget them. Do not let them rewrite the ownership case.
