Public charging: what it really costs

Fast charging is handy, but it can cost as much per mile as gas. Always check the price in the app before you plug in.

How prices work

Networks like Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint and Tesla set prices per site, per plan and sometimes by time of day, mostly per kWh and per minute in some places. The price is shown in the app or on the charger before you start. Idle fees apply if you stay plugged in after charging.

The break-even

Compared with the average gas car in our examples, an EV costs the same per mile at about $0.50/kWh. Home charging is far below that. Fast charging is often closer, so check the price before you plug in.

Tips

  • Memberships cut the per-kWh price if you fast charge often.
  • Charge to about 80%; above that it slows down, and per-minute billing gets expensive.
  • Slower Level 2 public chargers are often cheaper, or free at some retailers.

About sales tax

US prices on this page are shown as published. Gas pump prices already include federal and state fuel taxes; electricity rates and public charging may have state and local sales tax added on top, and that varies by state, county and city, so we don't split it out. Check your bill or the charger app for the tax that applies to you.
